PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress generation of "tapping noise" when a vehicle runs, and to enhance the ride quality of the vehicle. SOLUTION: A damping-force adjustable shock absorber 6 is interposed between a vehicle body 1 of a vehicle and a wheel 2 of the vehicle. A controller 10 outputs the control signal to an actuator 7 of the shock absorber 6 according to the detection signal from an acceleration sensor 8 and a vehicle height sensor 9. The damping-force characteristic of the shock absorber 6 is variably controlled between hard and soft. In this case, the controller 10 obtains the relative speed in the vertical direction between the vehicle body 1 and the wheel 2 by the signal from the vehicle height sensor 9. The change in the relative speed discriminates the time when the stroke of the shock absorber 6 is inverted between the extension stroke and the contraction stroke, and the damping-force characteristic is changed to the soft side when the process is inverted.
