PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition for a base tread capable of achieving a balance of low fuel consumption, breakage resistance and processability in a high level and capable of improving handling stability, and to provide a pneumatic tire using the same. SOLUTION: The rubber composition for the base tread contains a rubber component containing butadiene rubber modified by a compound represented by formula (1): and silica having a CTAB specific surface area of≥180 m<SP>2</SP>/g and a BET specific surface area of≥185 m<SP>2</SP>/g (wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>may be the same or different and are each alkyl, alkoxy, silyloxy, acetal, carboxyl, mercapto or a derivative thereof; R<SP>4</SP>and R<SP>5</SP>may be the same or different and are each represent a hydrogen atom or alkyl; and n is an integer).
