Diagnostic methods for determining whether a subject suffers from hepatic fibrosis, comprising the following steps: a) providing a contrast agent comprising a manganese (II) compound; b) administering the contrast agent orally to the subject; and c) subjecting the subject to magnetic resonance imaging of the liver after administration of the contrast agent.
