The method involves filling a viscous material into a cartridge (2) by a filling device (11), where the cartridge is held in a receiving unit (14). The filling of the cartridge is controlled based on back pressure forces for avoiding cavities in the material that is filled into the cartridge, where the forces lie at the receiving unit during filling of the cartridge. A drive device (19) i.e. servomotor, of the receiving unit is actuated as a function of the back pressure force. An independent claim is also included for a filling device comprising a control unit.
