PURPOSE: A semiconductor memory device and method of operating the same are provided to decide pass/ fail about data of big size by partitioning the data bigger than the maximum data throughput of the logic deciding the pass/ fail. CONSTITUTION: Page buffers program selected memory cells and store validation data showing the inspection result about the program. The add logic(182) adds the validation data with the fixed bit number unit and outputs each added result. The pass/ fail confirmation logic(183) receives the added result for the fixed receipt number and calculates the number of fail bit using the add result. The pass/ fail confirmation logic reiterates the operation of outputting a pass signal according to the calculated result as the fixed pass signal number. The control logic offers the fixed receipt number and maximum fail bit information to the pass/ fail confirmation logic.
