PURPOSE: A RTU apparatus for substation automation system having an IEC-61850 function and a control method thereof are provided to support various types of protocols with only the improvement of the RTU apparatus without the additional configuration of equipment. CONSTITUTION: An IEC(Intelligent Electronic Device)-61850 base server and client(112a,112b) interfaces with facilities based on IEC-61850. Servers(114a,116a) and clients(114b,116b) interface with facilities based on a field bus. Analog and digital I/O units(118a,118b) interface with field facilities connected in a hard-wiring mode. Using an ICD(IED Capability Description) file, a protocol configuration module unit(120) configures the data of the facility based on the field bus and the field facility into the ICD file for which data communication is possible with an IEC-61850 protocol.
