PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an escalator preventing catching regardless of the size, shape, or the like of foreign matter and dispensing with changing the mounting position of a base according to an operating direction. SOLUTION: This safety device for a passenger conveyor is characterized in that at least a part of the base 6 is mounted to be movable upward on a side face of a skirt guard panel 2 in the escalator including a plurality of steps 1 endlessly connected and circulated to the upper and lower floors, the skirt guard panels 2 arranged on both sides of the steps with clearances provided between themselves and both side faces of the steps 1, and the bases 6 disposed at the step-side side faces of the skirt guard panels 2 along the moving direction of the steps 1 and projected from the side faces of the skirt guard panels 2 to cover the upper parts of the clearances.
