PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve durability of a fixing film 18a with a simple structure. SOLUTION: A fixing device uses a temperature adjustment means 18i for cooling or heating so as to form a temperature gradient in the longitudinal direction of a heating resistor 18c at a proper timing, to move a fixing film 18a. Even when a transfer material of the same width is continuously fed, a temperature increase is prevented at a non-paper feeding region where the transfer material P is not in contact with the surface of the fixing film 18a, and edge-shaving is prevented at a film portion in contact with the end of the transfer material, thereby extending the service life of the fixing film. Even when the transfer material P of especially small width is continuously fed, the temperature increase is prevented at the end of the non-paper feeding region, and high-temperature offset due to a reduction in releasability at a paper edge portion is prevented.
