Disclosed is a liquid crystal display (1) which is provided with: a PDLC panel (5), which covers a display screen composed of a display portion (2a) and a peripheral portion (4a), and which transmits inputted light without a change in a state wherein a voltage is applied, and scatters the inputted light in the state wherein the voltage is not applied; and a voltage application control circuit (31), which controls such that the voltage is applied to the PDLC panel (5) from a voltage source (V1) at the time of displaying data on the display screen, and that the voltage is not applied to the PDLC panel (5) from the voltage source (V1) at the time of not displaying data on the display screen.
