PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bookbinding apparatus having no possibility of generating wrinkles and unevenness on a back cover part when bookbinding is performed by covering a bundle of inner paper sheets in a front cover sheet to perform the bookbinding, and at the same time, having no possibility of causing the inner paper sheets to be distorted and deformed in bookbinding. SOLUTION: In a bookbinding processing passage P5, there are arranged a gripping conveying means 30 which pinches the bundle Sn of the inner paper sheets by a pair of gripping members 33a and 33b and transfers it to a binding position X, a back butting member 64 for backup-supporting a front cover sheet at this binding position, and a pair of back bending members 65a and 65b for bending a back part. On a controlling means 80 for controlling the gripping conveying means 30, a sheet property recognizing means 86 related to strength of stiffness of the bundle of the inner paper sheets and/or the strength of stiffness of the front cover sheet, is provided, and the gripping position Pg for pinching the bundle of the sheets of a pair of the gripping members is made different in accordance with the strengths of the stiffness of the inner paper sheets and/or the front cover sheet recognized by the sheet property recognizing means.
