Linear aromatic polyester fibres or films are dyed or printed with a 1-aminoanthraquinone which bears an aromatic thioether radical joined via the sulphur atom at the 2-or 4-position. The 2- or 4-position which is not substituted by the thioether radical may be substituted by a hydroxyl group or by a substituted or unsubstituted amino group. The dyes are employed in finely-divided form and dyeing is effected in an aqueous bath at temperatures up to or above 100 DEG C., if desired in the presence of carriers such as benzoic or salicylic acid, or o- or p-hydroxy diphenyl, chlorobenzene, diphenyl or phenylmethyl carbinol. Printing pastes contain the usual thickness and, if desired, resorcinol, p-hydroxydiphenyl, o-hydroxydiphenyl or b -naphthol. Examples are given.
