Complexes of norbornadiene and salts of transition metals of Groups Ib and VIII of the Periodic Table (Deming) may be used as additives to hydrocarbon fuels, e.g. gasoline, diesel oil and paraffin and lubricants. Typical complexes are norbornadiene platinum dichloride, norbornadiene bis(silver nitrate) and norbornadiene rhodium chloride dimer. They may be added to gasoline together with scavengers such as ethylene dichloride, ignition control compounds such as tricreyl phosphate, and other anti-knock agents such as tetraethyl lead and methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl.ALSO:The invention comprises complexes of norbornadiene and a salt of a metal from Group Ib or VIII of the Periodic Table (Deming). Iron, ruthenium, osmium, nickel, palladium and platinum salts form 1 : 1 complexes: cobalt, rhodium and iridium salts form bis(1 : 1) complexes. Norbornadiene reacts with Group Ib metal salts to form 1 : 2 complexes. The norbornadiene (hydrocarbon containing a bicyclo(2 : 2 : 1)-hepta-2 : 5-diene ring) may carry substituent alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, alkaryl or aralkyl groups. Preferred metal salts are the cyanides, halides, nitrates, sulphates, acetates, phosphates and phosphites. The reaction is preferably carried out in a polar solvent such as water, ethanol, ether or chloroform, and if desired under a blanketing atmosphere to protect the reactants and products from oxidation.ALSO:Metal films may be deposited on a substrate material by the thermal decomposition in vacuo of a complex of norbornadiene and a salt of a transition metal of Group IB and VIII of the Periodic Table (Deming). Glass cloth may be coated with a layer of ruthenium by thermal decomposition of norbornadiene ruthenium dibromide.
