[Also in Groups VIII and XIII] A washing-machine drum is rotatable about a non-vertical axis by a motor 84 through a trans. mission including a spring clutch 180 and a device for preventing engagement of the clutch by any reverse rotation of the drum such as may occur due to unbalance of the clothes when the drum comes to rest after rotation. This device comprises a solenoid operated pin 186 biased by a spring 200 into engagement with one of several notches 198 in a plate 166 to which one end 182 of the spring 180 is secured. When the plate 166 is held by the pin 186 against rotation, the spring 180 tends to unwind and low-speed rotation is transmitted through a pinion 116 on the motor shaft 112, a gear 146 meshing with the pinion 116, a spring clutch 174, and a gear hub 152 keyed to a shaft 130 carrying a pulley 140 connected by belt drive to the clothes drum. When the solenoid 188 is energized pin 186 is withdrawn and high-speed drive is transmitted to the drum through a clutch hub 160 keyed to shaft 112, clutch spring 180, a gear hub 158, gears 156, 150 and shaft 130. After a spindrying period, a timer de-energizes the motor 84 and solenoid 188, and the plate 166 is arrested by the pin 186 before the clothes drum comes to rest. Any reverse rotation of the drum is therefore prevented by the pin 186 from causing reverse rotation of plate 166 which would tighten the spring 180; subsequent clothes tumbling starts at low speed. Energizing of solenoid 188 to withdraw pin 186 (for spinning) does not take place until the drum has rotated for a period at low speed.
