PURPOSE: A semiconductor memory device and a method for operating the same are provided to minimize the level of a current consumed in an auto refresh operation by making the number of a frequency of counting an internal address lower than the number of an input frequency of inputting an auto refresh command. CONSTITUTION: In a semiconductor memory device and a method for operating the same, a bank(200) is comprised of a plurality of mats(202,204). An address counting unit(220) receives an auto-refresh command. The address counting unit counts an internal address successively. An address transfer section(240) activates a plurality of mats and transmits the internal address to the plural mats. The internal address includes a mat selection address and a word line selection address.
