<p>The invention relates to a process and apparatus for producing molten metal comprising the steps and the means to pre-reduce the metal, feeding pre-reduced metal, coal and an oxygen containing gas to a melting-combustion device, receiving molten metal coming from the melting-combustion device in a container, feeding the combustion off-gasses from the melting-combustion device to the metal pre-reducing unit, wherein the combustion off-gasses before feeding it to the metal pre-reducing unit is fed through a coal bed contained in a reactor and wherein the coal is conveyed through the reactor and fed to the melting-combustion device. Said part of the invention produces molten metal in a continuous and controllable rate and is combined with a reactor or reactors to refine the molten metal to a liquid alloy of desired composition. One application of the invention can be to convert iron ore into pig iron and subsequently into liquid steel in one continuous process.</p> |
