PURPOSE: A device and method for controlling a transmission are provided to prevent a transmission from becoming damaged. CONSTITUTION: A transmission control unit(TCU) detects the malfunction of a transmission output shaft speed sensor(PG-B sensor)(S10). The transmission control unit determines whether a current transmission shifts gears or not(S20). The transmission control unit determines whether gears are initially shifted if the current transmission shifts gears(S40). The transmission control unit shifts the gears to a target transmission terminal(S50).
