Messages pending transmission in an apparatus 1000 are analyzed in order to determine a type for each message where the type may be control-type message or data-type message 1002, 1006. The type determined for each message is then be utilized to select a transport set comprising one or more transports (e.g. TCP/IP, Bluetooth(RTM), WLAN, USB). The apparatus selects a transport from the transport set 1010 and then transmits the pending messages using the selected transport 1012. The transport set may be prioritized based on operational characteristics of the transports compared to the condition of the apparatus, the environment or network-related information. The apparatus may reside in a Network on Terminal Architecture (NoTA) environment.
