The method involves generating a laser pulse (24) by a laser device (26), and strengthening the laser pulse by an optical amplifier that is arranged optically downstream to the laser device. The optical amplifier is impinged with a pump light of varying intensities to cause a corresponding optical amplification of the laser pulse. The laser device is provided with a laser-active solid body with a passive Q-switching, and is optically pumped such that loading of the optical amplifier takes place with the pump light regardless of optical pumping of the laser device. An independent claim is also included for an ignition device for an internal combustion engine with a laser device for generating laser pulse.
