PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which performs abutting or separating operation of an electrifying member that electrifies residual toner on an intermediate transfer body in order to collect the residual toner while applying voltage to the electrifying member, so that toner is efficiently discharged from the electrifying member. SOLUTION: The electrifying member 22 is made to abut on the intermediate transfer body 9 in a state where the voltage is applied to the electrifying member 22 or the electrifying member 22 is made to separate from the intermediate transfer body 9 in a state where the voltage is applied to the electrifying member 22, and the toner stuck to the electrifying member 22 is electrified to have the same polarity as that of the voltage applied to the electrifying member 22 by discharge current generated when the electrifying member 22 is made to abut on or separate from the intermediate transfer body 9, so that the toner is discharged from the electrifying member 22 to the intermediate transfer body 9.
