The method involves assigning an occupancy density to a grid cell of a printer, where the occupancy density represents printer dots per grid cell. An actual gray value (72) of a coloring agent is detected by the printer dots in a recording medium during a productive printing operation of the printer. A testing is made that whether the detected actual gray value corresponds to a reference gray value associated to a corresponding gray scale (64). Another occupancy density is associated to the corresponding gray scale when the actual value does not correspond to the reference value.
