PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an image display apparatus where the probability of the occurrence of breakage of spacers is significantly reduced. SOLUTION: The method includes: a step of forming an abutting layer containing a metal or a metal oxide and having porosity ranging from 20-50% on a back plate or a front plate at positions where the spacers are abutted; and a step of abutting the spacers on the abutting layer.
