Disclosed is an isolated or recombinant micro-organism which produces resveratrol. The disclosed microorganism has an operative metabolic pathway producing 4-coumaric acid and producing resveratrol there from, or an oligomeric or glycosidically-bound derivative thereof. The 4-coumaric acid is produced from L-phenylalanine by the action of an L-phenylalanine ammonia lyase and a cinnamate 4-hydroxylase expressed in said micro-organism or from tyrosine by the action of an L-phenylalanine ammonia lyase or of a tyrosine ammonia lyase expressed in said micro-organism. The 4-coumaroyI-CoA is formed from said coumaric acid in a reaction catalysed by a 4-coumarate-CoA ligase expressed in said micro-organism, and resveratrol or a said oligomeric or gIycosidically-bound derivative thereof is produced from said 4-coumaroyl-CoA in a reaction catalysed by a resveratrol synthase expressed in said micro-organism. |
