PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium, with which a useful magnetic recording medium having high surface smoothness and superior head floating characteristics is manufactured with high productivity. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the magnetic recording medium 30, after a magnetic layer 3 is formed on a nonmagnetic substrate 1 by partly implanting ions into the magnetic layer 3, the magnetic characteristics of a section implanted with the ions of the magnetic layer 3 are modified so as to form a magnetically separated magnetic recording pattern 3a, wherein when ions are partly implanted into the magnetic layer 3, a carbon film is formed on a surface of the magnetic layer 3, the thickness of the carbon film is partially reduced by patterning, and subsequently, the ions are partially implanted in the magnetic layer 3 via sections where the thickness of the carbon film is reduced.
