PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique of effectively producing a microstructurally modified cellulose fiber obtained by treatment with an organic onium compound. SOLUTION: There is provided a microstructurally modified cellulose fiber comprising subjecting a reactant fiber obtained by allowing an N-oxyl compound and a co-oxidizing agent to act on natural cellulose to a wet-dispersion treatment in the presence of an organic onium compound having a cationic structure represented by formula (1) (wherein M is a nitrogen atom or a phosphorus atom; and R<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>, R<SB>3</SB>, and R<SB>4</SB>are each independently a hydrocarbon group or a hetero-atom-containing hydrocarbon group, provided that the total sum of the numbers of carbons of R<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>, R<SB>3</SB>, and R<SB>4</SB>is 4-120, and that R<SB>1</SB>, R<SB>2</SB>, R<SB>3</SB>, and R<SB>4</SB>may be combined with each other to form a ring).
