An image processing apparatus includes: a creating means that creates identification information identifying a type of an image of image data among a 2D image for planar viewing, a 3D image for stereoscopic viewing including left and right images, and a duplex image which is capable of both stereoscopic viewing including the left and right images and planar viewing with disparity lower than that of the 3D image; and a transmitting means that transmits the identification information created by the creating means and the image data.
