The method involves determining position of a motor vehicle (1), and detecting number of driving strip (3) of a driving path (2). Marking characteristics of the driving path are extracted from position of the motor vehicle and a digital map. A driving strip mark (4) and the marking characteristics of the mark are extracted from a surrounding field data of an image processing device. The marking characteristics extracted from the map and the characteristics that are determined by the device are compensated using a classifier to determine the path of the vehicle regarding an actual position. An independent claim is also included for a driver assisting system for implementing the method for assigning the driving strip of the driving path to the motor vehicle.
