The present invention relates to a base (10) for supporting an object on a surface, the base having: a central support (12) having a first set of two adjacent legs (20, 21) and a second set of legs (18, 19), each leg extending radially from the support; a leg assembly that includes the first set of legs and a mount to which the legs are fixed and the mount is mounted to the central support for pivotal movement of the mount and legs relative to the support and each of the second set of legs are fixed to the lower section of the support; and a lock mechanism moveable between a free position in which the leg assembly can pivot and a locked position which locks the leg assembly against pivotal movement, wherein the lock mechanism is in the locked position when the base is at rest on a surface and the legs are in a weight bearing position and moves to the free position when the base is lifted from the surface and the first set of legs are in a non-weight bearing position.
