<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a TN type, ECB type or OCB type liquid crystal display device with high front contrast. <P>SOLUTION: The TN type, ECB type or OCB type liquid crystal display device includes a front side polarizer, a rear side polarizer, a liquid crystal layer, and a color filter layer disposed between the liquid crystal layer and the rear side polarizer, and is provided with: a rear side phase difference area disposed between the rear side polarizer and the color filter layer; and a front side phase difference area disposed between the front side polarizer and the liquid crystal layer. The rear side phase difference area comprises a first phase difference layer which is composed of one, two or more optically anisotropic polymer films and satisfies ¾Rth(550)¾≤140 nm.
