PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a truing method efficiently flattening unevenness caused by the difference in the grinding amount of the grinding wheel of a grinding machine. SOLUTION: A truing roll 9 is wider than a projecting part of a grinding wheel 7, and by executing the relative motion of the truing roll 9 and the grinding wheel 7 in the width direction of the grinding wheel, only the projecting part of the grinding wheel 7 is selectively removed to efficiently flatten the unevenness. There is provided a truing motor power detection means 331 for detecting the contact state of the grinding wheel 7 with the truing roll 9. The start and the end of the truing are determined based on the detection output. The truing time is shortened and any excessive consumption of the grinding wheel is prevented by performing the rapid operation before the start of the truing, and preventing any excessive truing after the completion of the truing.
