PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording/reproducing apparatus and method configured to improve a quality of image without imposing a heavy processing load in transcoding a digital broadcast.

SOLUTION: One embodiment includes: extracting a descriptor included in an information table in a stream of an input digital broadcast; and setting a conversion mode in transcoding with reference to a classification of the extracted descriptor.
