PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based emulsion excellent in the permeability into a substrate and weatherability; and to provide a water-based paint containing such a water-based emulsion, and particularly, a water-based paint for wood, applied to wood. SOLUTION: There are provided: the water-based emulsion obtained by emulsion polymerizing (A) a polymerizable unsaturated monomer in the presence of (B) sulfonation-modified polyvinyl alcohol, in which (A) the polymerizable unsaturated monomer contains (meth)acrylic ester; and the water-based paint containing the water-based emulsion, and particularly, the water-based paint for wood, applied to wood.
