Disclosed is a device for collecting an analysable amount of DNA from a fingerprint on a surface, comprising: a) a holder member having a first end and second end; and b) a DNA collecting member adapted to collect and release an analysable amount of DNA, comprising a cotton yarn having a first end and second end; each end attached to the first end of the holder member. The cotton yarn of the invention is not wrapped around the holder member to form a bud.
