PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium, with which a smoothing process of a magnetic layer which has a sharp magnetic recording pattern is appropriately conducted, as well as, at a high speed. SOLUTION: When a surface of a nonmagnetic layer 4 covering a processed surface of a magnetic layer 2 is to be ground until the magnetic layer 2 is exposed, swelling or recession, reverse to the surface of the nonmagnetic layer 4, with respect to the surface of the magnetic layer 2, is prevented by forming magnetic particles constituting the uppermost layer of the magnetic layer 2 with a CoCr-based alloy, of which the content of Cr is 5-24 atom%, and forming the nonmagnetic layer 4 with a CoCr-based alloy, of which the content of Cr is 15-80 atom%, and these surfaces are planarized continuously.
