PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tape printer which enables reduction of a power consumption, and to provide a controlling method and a program. SOLUTION: The tape printer 1 includes an operation accepting section (a keyboard 11, an input interface 35 and a CPU 31) which accepts an entry operation, a display section 12 which performs screen display on the basis of the entry operation accepted by the operation accepting section, an illuminating section (a back light 46) which illuminates the display section, a power supply circuit 50 which changes ON and OFF of a power supply of the tape printer 1, and a controlling section 30 which controls the operation of the tape printer 1. The controlling section 30 changes to a first power-saving mode in which illumination of the illuminating section is turned off when the operation accepting section does not accept the entry operation for a first time, and changes to a second power-saving mode in which the power supply of the power supply circuit 50 is turned off when the operation accepting section does not accept the entry operation for a second time longer than the first time.
