The invention relates to a computer-assisted method and a data processing system for simulating an embedded system, in which a plurality of components respectively formed from hardware provided with software are interconnected via a data exchange network for the purposes of data exchange. In a simulation program, each component is simulated as a processing unit administering a plurality of processes. A starting time is dynamically associated with each of the processing units using the simulation program. The processing units are dynamically sorted successively according to their starting times. The processing unit with the following starting time is selected by means of a scheduler. Following the selection of a processing unit, the active process associated therewith is simulated by running a program code derived from a base block graph corresponding thereto, and the time required for the running and/or the information about the function thus created are determined as a result of the simulation.
