The device has a frame with a receiver (2) for holding a spindle (3), and a holder for a ball nut (8). A displacement transducer (17) measures relative position of the spindle to the ball nut in a direction of Z-axis. A rotary angle sensor (6) measures rotary position of the ball nut and/or the spindle. Clamping units (18, 19) generates initial tension of the ball nut against the spindle as axial force in a direction of Z-axis. A drive unit (4) rotates the ball nut and/or the spindle in operation. An independent claim is also included for a method for testing a ball screw for measuring an axial clearance between a ball nut and a spindle guided in the nut.
