PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient method for hydrolysis of a biomass cellulose.

SOLUTION: The Humicola grisea Cel7A (CBH1.1) variant, an H. jecorina variant or an S. thermophilium CBH1, and a nucleic acid which encodes them and methods for production thereof are provided. The variant cellulases have the amino acid sequence of a glycosyl hydrolase of family 7A wherein one or more amino acid residues are substituted.
