PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source device and a lighting method of the light source device wherein it becomes possible to suppress the upper electrode tip from becoming short in a vertically arranged high pressure discharge lamp. SOLUTION: In the light source device to carry out alternating-current lighting of the high pressure discharge lamp 2 having a pair of the upper electrode 21 and the lower electrode 22 so as to be arranged to be vertically positioned, the light source device 1 is equipped with a control portion 4 which, upon lighting start, turns on the high pressure discharge lamp with a ratio T1/T2 of a prescribed value of 1 or more when T1 denotes a period of cathode operation of the upper electrode 21 and T2 denotes a period of cathode operation of the lower electrode 22, and after lighting starts, determines that the tip of the upper electrode 21 becomes short and sets the ratio so that the prescribed value increases.
