PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data storage device that can speed up backup by performing preprocessing of backup, even when an external storage medium is not mounted. SOLUTION: A data management unit 16 selects backup data to an external storage medium 15 from internal storage mediums 14. A write image generation unit 22 generates a write image of backup data and saves it in the internal storage medium 14 before the external storage medium 15 is mounted. An encryption key storage part 21 stores the encryption keys of the external storage mediums mounted in the past, and an encryption part 20 encrypts the data using the stored encryption keys. When the external storage medium 15 is mounted, a medium control unit 13 writes the write image saved in the internal storage medium 14 onto the external storage medium 15.
