A process for refining molten pig iron by surface blowing in which increased scrap additions may be made comprises injecting one or more gaseous or easily gasifiable liquid hydrocarbons into the upper part of the oxygen jet between the lance and the bath and increasing the quantity of oxygen supplied to the jet. The hydrocarbons may be supplied through the same or a separate lance, in the latter case the hydrocarbon lance should be spaced from the oxygen lance in the horizontal direction not more than 150 mm. The hydrocarbon may be natural gas, methane, coke oven gas or a light hydrocarbon oil.
