Disclosed is a hydrogen generation device (150) provided with: a first desulfurizer (13) which removes by adsorption a sulfur compound in source gas to be supplied to a reformer; a second desulfurizer (21) which hydrodesulfurizes the sulfur compound in the source gas to be supplied to the reformer, a first path (16) through which the source gas is supplied to the reformer via the first desulfurizer (13), a second path (17) through which the source gas is supplied to the reformer not via the first desulfurizer (13) but via the second desulfurizer (21), a switching unit which performs switching between the first path (16) and the second path (17), and a controller. The controller controls the switching unit such that the source gas flows through the first path (16) in a pressure compensation operation for replenishing the source gas in order to compensate for a reduction in internal pressure after an operation for generating hydrogen-containing gas is stopped and/or a source gas purge operation for purging the interior of the hydrogen generation device with the source gas.
