The method involves radiating a driving surface area using a light source (3) i.e. three dimensional laser scanner, and implementing sensory detection of the light that is reflected from the area. A puddle (5) is recognized, when the light that is received by the sensor fulfils preset characteristics. A permissible steering angle change is limited, after recognition of the puddle. Engine throttling, engine moment-decoupling or an automatic brake process are implemented, after recognition of the puddle. The occurrence of wheel-slip is found by evaluation of wheel-rotary speed sensor signals. An independent claim is also included for a device for recognizing the puddle that lies in front of the motor vehicle.
