The method involves accelerating an electric motor (2) in two rotational directions above a starting angle without coupling engagement during starting process. A coupling part is connected with a rotor of the electric motor. Another coupling part is connected with a pump wheel of a pump. The motor is driven in one of the rotational directions in one start-up test if the pump wheel blocks during another start-up test, and a rotor of the motor starts above a maximum starting angle without engagement with the coupling parts that are engaged with each other. An independent claim is also included for a device for driving a pump for a household appliance.
