Disclosed is an arrangement to detect oestrus or heat in dairy cattle. The arrangement comprises: a sensor (11) attached to a milking animal for measuring lying and standing times; a part (15) which moves from a first position when standing to a second position when lying; a circuit (21) influenced by the part; means to detect (13) the lying and standing times based on the circuit; and a hollow cone (25), the cone's tip is oriented downwards when the animal is standing. The part is in the cone and moves by means of gravity, from the tip of the cone when the animal is standing to the base when the animal is lying.
