The method involves assigning an unheated lambda step sensor (5) to an internal-combustion engine (1) for determination of lowering or exceeding of a preset portion of a gas component in exhaust gas of the engine. A temperature sensor (6) is assigned to the engine for determining temperature of the gas. The temperature and a signal of the sensor indicating lowering or exceeding of the preset portion are directly supplied to a controller (7) of the engine. The controller is provided for determining an operating parameter of the engine from the value of the temperature of the gas. The operating parameter of the engine is designed as ignition timing and fuel injection amount of the engine.
