Provided are an image display device and an image display method which are capable of making a total light emitting period for each display line longer. The display device (100) for displaying an image is provided with a plurality of display lines for configuring a display screen and displaying gradation information held by display data for each line, a first gate driver (120) for sequentially writing the display data into a first storage capacity (198) provided for each pixel circuit, a third gate driver (131) for writing, into a second storage capacity (192) provided for each pixel circuit, the display data which has been written in the first storage capacity (198), and an organic EL element (191) for emitting light on the basis of the display data which has been written in the second storage capacity (192). The first gate driver (120) writes the display data of the next image into the first storage capacity (198) during the continuous light emitting of the display lines by the organic EL element (191).
