VESSEL SEALING INSTRUMENT WITH ELECTRICAL CUTTING MECHANISM Abstract An end effector assembly for use with an instrument for sealing vessels and 5 cutting vessels includes a pair of opposing first and second jaw members (110, 120) which are movable relative to one another from a first spaced apart position to a second position for grasping tissue therebetween. Each jaw member (110, 120) includes a pair of spaced apart electrically conductive tissue contacting surfaces (112, 122) which each have an insulator (113, 123) disposed therebetween, the conductive surfaces (112, 122) are 10 connected to an electrosurgical energy source. The first jaw member (110) includes an electrically conductive cutting element (127) disposed within the insulator (113) which extends towards the second tissue contacting surface (122) to create a gap therebetween. The cutting element (127) is inactive during the sealing process while the two pairs of electrically conductive surfaces (112, 122) are activated to seal tissue. During the cutting 15 process, the cutting element (127) is energized to a first potential and at least one electrically conductive tissue contacting surface (112, 122) is energized to a different potential to effect a tissue cut through the tissue held between the jaw members (110, 120) along the already formed tissue seal.
