A protective system for a D.C. or single-phase A.C. network comprises means 9 . . . 11 for injecting a high frequency monitoring current into a protected line 1, a device 12, 13 responsive to the magnitude of the monitoring current and effective to trip a circuit-breaker 3, an auxiliary line L, coupling circuits r 1 . . . r 3 arranged between the lines 1, 2 at substantially regular intervals so as to define a series of sections, and capacitors for tuning each of the sections to the frequency of the monitoring current. In the arrangement shown, the coupling circuits are resistors which diminish in value as the distances of the coupling circuits from the supply source increases so that the sensitivity of the system is substantially constant irrespective of the situation of a fault to earth. The capacitors may be arranged in the auxiliary line L as shown or in the coupling circuits, Fig. 2 (not shown). Two or more auxiliary lines may be provided, each line being associated with a group of sections, Fig. 3 (not shown). In this case a current transformer associated with each line energizes a detector and trip device. In other arrangements a current transformer forms each coupling circuit, the transformer energizing a relay which causes the tripping of a local circuit, Fig. 4 (not shown), or causes the application of a D.C. control current to the auxiliary line to produce the tripping of a main circuit-breaker, Fig. 5 (not shown). |
