PURPOSE: In case an image is formed, an image forming apparatus is provided to suppress the deterioration of the image caused by a return state regardless of the thickness of a sheet. CONSTITUTION: A sensor outputs a check signal. A contact portion is projected into a sheet return path(33) between an upstream return portion and a downstream return portion. The contact portion is touched with a sheet returned through the sheet return path. The contact portion is carried. According to the kind of the sheet, a contact force varying unit(27) varies the contact force of the contact portion on the sheet returned through the sheet return path.
