PURPOSE: An image reading apparatus and method are provided to improve the quality of a read image. CONSTITUTION: A light source(110) includes three or more light emitting devices. A light emitting time controller(121) controls that a first time interval is smaller than a second time interval for image reading as many as a predetermined value. A radiation intensity controller(122) controls that the radiation intensity of the light emitting devices is increased in correspondence with the predetermined value. A sensor array(130) converts a picked up image into an electric signal. An output unit(140) outputs image data corresponding to the converted electric signal.
